Review: Magic's Pawn (The Last Herald Mage #1). Now normally I would consider a Mercedes Lackey novel to be low-hanging fruit. She knows her audience and she can tell them the same basic stories in slightly different settings as many time as she wants The other Herald-Mages show up and are pissed at Vanyel, who is slowly being killed by the Gate, because they like Tylendel better than him and don't want to be mad at Tylendel for what he has done. I won't review the books individually, but I will list the books in the order of publication (the order in which I recommend anyone read the books), but I will point out some of my favorites (and why they are favorites). One of the first fantasy novels I ever read. I'll consider myself doing all right. Heartlight by Marion Zimmer Bradley is another of my beloveds. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Mercedes Lackey's books. On the other hand, the audiobook starts off pretty well done and interesting with all the different voices reading, but then I just found the sound effects to be a little too much. I'd never heard of Elizabeth A. "Magic Kingdom For Sale, Sold!" by Terry Brooks. She often includes gay characters, and her Last Herald Mage trilogy (starting with Magic's Pawn) does feature a gay main character.
